Developing therapeutic interventions for sexually transmitted infections

About the Sikora Lab

The Sikora Lab at Oregon State University develops vaccines against Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacterium responsible for gonorrhea — one of the world's most pressing antibiotic-resistant sexually transmitted infections. Using proteomics-driven reverse vaccinology, bioinformatics, and immunoinformatics, we identify and characterize protective antigens, dissect their structure and function, and test them across multiple vaccine platforms, including recombinant subunit proteins, outer membrane vesicles, virus-like particles, nucleic acid–based vaccines, and live bacterial vectors. We evaluate vaccine candidates in 3D human mucosal models and animal challenge models, with a focus on mucosal correlates of protection.
